2023 - Eagles Sustainability Competition

The Eagles Sustainability Competition challenges teams of undergraduate students to propose solutions to a sustainability-related issue on Boston College鈥檚 campus. The inaugural competition took place in March 2023, with the prompt focusing on reducing the environmental impact of BC Athletics鈥� game days. Teams were required to be interdisciplinary, with at least two different academic majors represented, and to present data-driven solutions. Final presentations were 15-minute pitches judged by faculty, staff, and alumni. Learn more about the winning teams below.

Winning Teams

First Place: City Council of Boston College ($3,000)

Team members:听Fran Hodgens (Accounting for Finance and Consulting, Business Analytics, CSOM), Charles Neill (Human Centered Engineering, MCAS), Faith Drescher (Elementary Education, Applied Psychology, Lynch).

Proposal: A five-year sustainability plan addressing both the inside and outside of Alumni Stadium, including the weatherization of concessions areas to reintroduce fountain drinks in compostable cups, the use of behavioral models to encourage fan compliance with green initiatives, and a financial analysis with risk assessment to ensure feasibility.

Second Place: Green Queens ($1,500)

Team members:听Natalie Sill (Finance, CSOM), Hanganh Vo (International Studies, MCAS), Maureen Kelly (Geoscience, MCAS).

Proposal: Creating a strong marketing plan to promote sustainability on game days, incorporating engaging strategies to encourage student participation.

Third Place: Greening Eagles ($500)

Team members:听Lauren Dadekian (Management and Environmental Studies, MCAS/CSOM), Sancia Sehdev (Biology, MCAS), Anisha Kundu (Finance, CSOM), Tyler DiFiore (Economics and Political Science, MCAS).

Proposal: Consideration of game day food sourcing as part of sustainability efforts.听

The competition was sponsored by the Schiller Institute, Carroll School of Management, Undergraduate Government Boston College (UGBC), and the Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics. The planning committee included:
